The science: China's Einstein Probe — a wide-field X-ray telescope launched January 2024 — detected an extraordinary transient in June 2026 exhibiting two distinct X-ray flares separated by a period of quiescence. Unlike gamma-ray bursts, magnetar flares, tidal disruption events, or any known compact binary system, the double-peak morphology fits no established classification. No optical or radio counterpart has been confirmed. Einstein Probe scans 3,600 sq-degrees per orbit, and similar events are already accumulating — suggesting the X-ray sky harbors an entire class of objects for which we currently have no theoretical framework.
