The science: Researchers at CU Boulder discovered that Pyrocystis lunula dinoflagellates can be held lit for minutes using simple chemical solutions — no electricity required. Normally a crashing wave lowers vacuole pH from 7.0 to 5.5, activating luciferase to oxidize luciferin and emit 480 nm blue light. The new chemical method bypasses the mechanical step entirely, opening paths to living, electricity-free lamps, autonomous dark-environment robots, and real-time water-quality sensors that glow when pollutants are detected.
